Are YOU Paying Attention?

November 18, 2015

Pay attention *|FNAME|*. Give yourself permission to pay attention to what happens everyday. Give yourself permission to slow down, to smell the roses, if you will. Life goes by so fast that many times when you look up you realize it's mid November and you're not sure what you did with your life or this year. You look up and realize that you were on autopilot and pretty much coasted through the year.  Give yourself permission to slow down, to pay attention to the details of your day and of your life. Don't make spending time with people you love an appointment but really be present and enjoy the moment.

You might be asking, where this is coming from. Well it's because this is what I have to make myself do. This is why I took a break and stopped 'doing' so I could just 'be' and let me tell you it's the hardest thing to do. For someone who was raised a doer, learning to just be takes work. It's not something that comes naturally because as long as I can remember I've always been 'doing' something.

But earlier this year, let's say around June or July, I realized that I was tired, maybe even burned out and I needed a break. I realized that what I was doing wasn't fun anymore, it was becoming routine. If you know anything about me, you know when it's not fun, I don't like it and I don't do it. So I decided that after everything was over, I'd take some time to pull back instead of leaning in to get back to core of me. To figure out what this next season and next year would look like for me.

So let me ask you this question, are you feeling tired, pulled, lulled, in a rut? Well it could be that you and your soul are yearning for rest. It could be that you've been operating on autopilot for so long that your body, mind, spirit and soul need to be fed. Not just by mundane things but things that really feed and nourish. Things that make you come alive.

As I teach you to fill your cup, I too have to be cognizant that I can't pour into your cup if mine is empty. Many times the lull, the drag and rut in your life is a sign of an empty or near empty well. Pay attention to signs. Pay attention to signals. Pay attention to what your mind, body, soul and spirit are speaking to you.

But here's the thing, sometimes you can't 'hear' what they are saying because life is too loud. This is why it's so important to find time to get quiet. This is why it's so important to shut down. This is why it's so important to rest. Now guess what, it may not always seem like the right time but listen here, it's never the right time. If you wait for the right time, it will never come. Just do it and make it happen.

I think I mentioned this briefly last week.  I was at a networking event and I was sharing how I was taking some time to get quiet and replenish and one of the two women I was speaking with said 'I so need that and I wish I could do that." I told her she could. Here is what I shared: "Look at your calendar over the next few weeks or month and see where you might have a gap of time. It could be a few hours, a few days or weeks. Pick a day, take off and rest."

So I'm going to tell you the same thing I told her.

Here's your assignment:

Find time before the year is out to just shut down and rest. You may have to cancel some things. You may have to say no to some things you've already said yes to but don't just look for the time, MAKE THE TIME.

I promise you will appreciate and love yourself even more. But here's the thing, if you're a busybody like me, you'll need more than a day at a time. Your mind and body will need to adjust.<
